Chadderton 2-0 Cheadle Town
Cheadle Town's poor league form continued as they fell to a 0-2 defeat at Chadderton
Are you a "glass half-full" or "half-empty" kind of person?
Half-full? Then our form isn't too bad. If you're counting all competitions then it's three wins in the last six.
Half-empty? As far as league form is concerned it's one win in the last seven and this was our first league defeat at Andrew Street since the 2011-12 season.
Your outlook on life also determines how you viewed our performance in this defeat. The "fulls" will be citing our bad luck - we struck the woodwork twice - whilst the "emptys" will point to the fact that our keeper Danny Whiting was Chadderton's choice for Man of the Match and the scoreline could have been a lot worse on a different day.
The scoreline at half-time was 1-0 to Chadderton and came as a result of us never really "getting going" in that first 45 minutes.
Our only foray into the Chadderton box came in the 5th minute when Rick Whyatt's cross from the right looked on a plate for George Clarey but he couldn't finish.
From then on it was the hosts who had the better of it. Danny Whiting came out bravely to deny their no11 Leon Illuobe on the quarter-hour mark with Joe Shaw then heading off the line after they had been granted a free shot at the far post from a corner.
The deadlock was broken just before the half-hour and in slightly farcical circumstances from our defence's point of view as a throw-in from the right was inadvertently headed across the face of our own goal, straight into the path of an unmarked Jordan Matthew who had time to take a touch and slam home.
Their no9 Matthew Buckley then curled an effort inches wide before Danny Whiting made an incredible one-handed save to deny a close-range header just before half-time.
A different half, a different - better - Cheadle.
Rick Whyatt and Adam Gardiner combined to provide George Clarey with a chance but he was denied by a close-range save with Antony Trucca's header cleared off the line from the resulting corner.
Rick Whyatt then had a chance of his own on 57 minutes as he was sent clear on the right but he too had his effort saved.
After a short break to allow for a dog that had decided to join in on the pitch Jake Ambrose headed an Adam Gardiner free-kick over the bar with the action then straight down the other end as Danny Whiting got his hand to an effort with Joe Shaw mopping up the loose ball and hacking off the line.
And straight after that Jake Ambrose laid off for Tom Russell to ping one from the edge of the area, only to see it skim off the top of the crossbar.
As the match entered its final ten minutes Danny Whiting was busy again, coming out to punch a long throw clear and then having to beat away the second effort that came his way.
With five minutes left on the clock Chadderton extended their lead and sealed the points.
From our corner Chadderton broke downfield, lost possession and then - thanks to our carelessness - regained it again, feeding Matthew Buckley down the left who forced Danny Whiting into a good stop only for him to tap in the rebound.
Next up is a trip to struggling Nelson whose only victory this season has come against us! Chance for revenge and to arrest the slump in league form.

A late Thabiso Magida goal rescued a point for Cheadle Town in another game they dominated
Thabiso Magida scored five minutes from time to earn Cheadle Town a share of the points in a game that the visitors will be disappointed not to have claimed all the points.
The midfielder fired home from close range after a being set up by James Horan who controlled the ball on his chest before releasing it to the oncoming Magida.
It was a worthy reward for Cheadle Town, who had fallen behind on 55 minutes when Nicholas Alexander fired home at the far post following a defensive mix-up.
Cheadle Town were to be left frustrated after a dominant first-half that saw good scoring chances falling to Sam Noar, Liam Tongue and Richard Whyatt.
This was followed by an equally frustrating second-half which saw Tongue have a number of good scoring opportunities and a Matthew German header rebound off the bottom of the post before Chadderton took the lead against the run of play.
Cheadle continued to press forward for the equaliser and should have taken that opportunity on 78 minutes when Tongue broke the off-side trap but could only fire his shot straight into the arms of the Chadderton keeper.
Magida finally got the equaliser on 85 minutes to earn Cheadle Town a deserved share of the points.
Cheadle Town 5-4 Chadderton
Cheadle Town registered their first league win of the 2016-17 season in a nine-goal thriller at Park Road
“Play until the final whistle”, is an all too common phrase heard in football. But that was certainly the case for Cheadle Town on Wednesday evening when they played host to Chadderton.
With the game drawing to a close and both sides being resigned to a share of the points, a moment of magic happened as a counter attack began on the halfway line which resulted in Chris Sherrington bundling the ball home from close range.
On the back of Cheadle Town’s victory in the FA Cup, it was back to League action and a chance to get some points on the board. Cheadle were without key players Liam Tongue, Tom Russell and James Dunn, but it was an opportunity for players like Rick Whyatt to come back in to the team.
Cheadle got off to the best possible starts with an early goal on 5 minutes when Sam Noar seized onto a poor back pass from the Chadderton defender and beat the keeper at the near post. Cheadle could have increased their lead further on 11 minutes as Mike Sherrington volleyed a shot straight into the keepers arms.
Chadderton got themselves back into the game on 13 minutes as James Curley was the quickest to react to a defensive mix up and scored from close range.
It was end to end football and James Moore was unlucky not to score on 18 minutes as he connected to a free kick but could only put his shot wide of the post. Cheadle were soon rewarded on 23 minutes when a Chris Sherrington cross found the incoming Rick Whyatt who slid in to poke the ball home.
Two minutes later Cheadle extended their lead as Sam Noar got his second goal of the game as he ran onto a through ball and slotted the ball past the oncoming keeper. But determined Chadderton got themselves back into the game on 39 minutes when Matthew Crothers reacted quicker to a shot that had rebounded off the post to score.
HT: Cheadle Town 3 Chadderton 2
Cheadle came out to the second half minus defender James Moore who suffered a shoulder injury late in the first half. But that didn’t deter Cheadle who once again extended their lead on 49 minutes when Rick Whyatt scored from close range to grab his second goal of the game.
After this, we witnessed an extended period of Chadderton pressure and it was no surprise that they got their rewards on 71 minutes when Jack Tuohy scored from an angle to beat Ben Jupp at the near post. Chadderton were then level on 77 minutes when Matthew Chilton found space on the right wing and drilled a low shot into the net.
Both sides continued to attack and it was Cheadle who claimed all point during injury time when James Horan found space in the middle of the park before passing it out wide to Mike Sherrington who found his brother Chris with an inch perfect pass to seal the three points.
Chadderton 0-1 Cheadle Town
Cheadle Town moved up to 5th spot with this late win at Andrew Street.
Despite there being plenty of half-chances for either side this oddly didn't feel like a classic. Thankfully perseverance paid off for us in the end.
The hosts had the best of the opening quarter of an hour.
Josh Samberg was called into action with 5 minutes gone as he made a good block at his near post and could do nothing about Curley's effort on the 12th minute, the ball fortunately cannoning back off the upright.
Chadderton were in again on 16 minutes as a ball was fizzed across the goalmouth but the player at the far post couldn't connect with the goal at his mercy.
A bit of penalty box pinball granted us our first half-chance two minutes later but nobody was on-hand to slam home with our next opportunity coming just after the half-hour mark: Darrhyl Mason's header from a corner being saved with the loose ball then being skied over the bar by Anthony Trucca.
Josh Samberg then had to make a good save to deny Curley before he was beaten to the ball from a Chadderton free-kick, the resulting header sailing harmlessly over.
He was to deny Curley once more shortly after the restart which proved to be the last time the hosts gave Josh anything to do.
The last twenty minutes of the match were all ours as Chadderton tired.
Darryhl Mason robbed the keeper of the ball on the 70th minute and rounded him, only for his attempts to cut the ball back to be thwarted by the keeper who had made a recovery.
Darryhl was instrumental once again in our next chance a minute later, steaming down the right to deliver a cross for substitute Arnold Nsmibe at the far post only for him to side-foot wide.
With five minutes remaining we thought we had a legitimate claim for a penalty as Darryhl surged into the box and was felled, with the sound of his boot being clipped audible to all on the Cheadle bench; he suffered the same fate three minutes later but yet again no penalty.
In between those two moments Anthony Trucca rose to a Luke Hincks corner but could only plant his header high and not-so handsome.
We were clearly starting to bang our fists on Chadderton's door. Could we push it open before we ran out of time?
Yes, but with only two minutes to spare.
In a match where arguably the final ball and/or end product was lacking from both sides, Danny Vincent chose the right moment to send the perfect cross in from the right for Rick Whyatt to theatrically fling himself at and bury a header from close range.
No rest for the wicked. Another road trip - albeit a short one - on Tuesday night as we travel to Stockport Town.

Cheadle Town 1-1 Chadderton
Cheadle Town were pegged back by a late Chadderton goal as the points were shared once again at Park Road
Two draws. Two different feelings. Whereas last Saturday's heroics felt like a win, this one felt like a loss.
Despite good early pressure from us with a series of corners, it looked as though Chadderton were going to strike the first blow after just six minutes when they were awarded a penalty. Luckily for us the ball cannoned back off the post with us then spending the rest of the first half doing our level best to punish Chaddy for the miss.
A frantic opening ten minutes gave way to our first decent chance after twelve, Darrhyl Mason looking set to connect with a Luke Pearson cross but being thwarted at the last by some good defending.
Darrhyl was then in the thick of it again after 17 minutes as he lung-bust his way through on goal but could only shoot tamely into the keeper's arms with him then providing the ball for James Horan on the edge of the box to crash a shot off the foot of the post.
A minute later and our pressure told. Good build-up work down the left resulted in the ball being squared for Rick Whyatt in acres of space and all the time in the world to hammer home from the edge of the box.
Antony Trucca fizzed a shot inches wide just after the half-hour mark with Chris Sherrington providing a perfect low cross for James Horan to latch onto but the resulting flick towards goal was agonisingly wide.
Chadderton reminded us that they weren't out of this game just before half time, forcing Steve Piggott to make an excellent fingertip save over the bar from a fierce long-range drive.
Steve ended up doing himself a mischief making that save and didn't reappear for the second half. His replacement Josh Clews was called into action in the 57th minute by making a wonderful reaction save to tip a header over the bar.
If truth be told we created very little in a second half where we steadily faded away. Chadderton's slow-but-sure increase of pressure finally paid off for them with only five minutes of the match remaining: perennial tormentor of Cheadle Town - even in his Oldham days - James Curley with the simplest of headers from close range following a corner.
There was still time for that typically Cheadle "will we or won't we" moment when Chris Sherrington lashed a shot goalwards deep into stoppage time, but there was to be no late drama this time around as the ball skidded harmlessly wide.
Onto this Saturday now, when we pit our wits against NWCFL newcomers Whitchurch Alport.
